Commentary, analysis, and links upholding reason, individualism, and capitalism
i think that without a philosophical basis the movement is essentially just economic utilitarianism or as they call themselves "fiscal conservatives". it also highlights the false dichotomy social freedom/economic freedom when freedom is of a piece. I dunno I have to say this is going to be interesting and dissapointing at the same time. The GOP needs to drop the religious nuts, stop talking about "state" rights and start promoting individual liberties particularly egoism and property rights.
Very interesting article. I may be a Christian, but I'm also a free-market capitalist. I consider the two belief systems to be mutually exclusive of each other. I believe the late great Barry Goldwater once said something rather similar... Goldwater warned the leadership of the GOP that religious leaders are/were trying to "hijack" the party as far back as the early 80s when he was still active in the US Senate and as recently as the 1996 Presidential Campaign when he warned Bob Dole to keep his distance from guys like Jerry Falwell. I wish the leaders of the GOP had heeded Goldwater's advice!
